When Can I Start Baby-Led Weaning?

Wondering when to start baby-led weaning? Learn the 4 key signs of readiness and why 6 months is usually the magic number.

Starting solids is a huge milestone—and knowing when your baby is ready can feel a little overwhelming. We’re here to help make the transition feel simple, safe, and supportive.

Unlike traditional methods that rely on purées from 4 months, baby-led weaning (BLW) follows your baby’s developmental cues—typically around 6 months old.

So how do you really know if your baby is ready?

✅ 1. They can sit up with minimal support

Your baby should be able to sit upright in a high chair or on your lap without slumping. This helps reduce the risk of choking and ensures they can safely swallow food.

✅ 2. Good head and neck control

They should be able to hold their head steady and turn away if they’ve had enough. This is a crucial step for safe self-feeding.

✅ 3. Interest in food

Is your baby watching you eat? Reaching for your fork? That curiosity is a great sign they’re ready to explore real food.

✅ 4. Loss of tongue-thrust reflex

This reflex causes babies to push food out with their tongue. Once it fades, they’re better able to move food around their mouth and swallow safely.

📌 Tip: All four signs should be present—not just age alone. Every baby develops at their own pace.

What if my baby isn’t showing all the signs yet?

That’s totally normal. Some babies may not be ready until closer to 7 months. There’s no rush—milk (breast or formula) is still the main source of nutrition until age one.
